Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. —Psalm 82:3

As we enter the new year of 2026, this is a crucial season for intercessors to lift our nation in prayer. Our country is facing a fierce spiritual attack that continues to divide us. The struggle we are witnessing is larger than any single organization, political viewpoint, or national boundary. Racism, discrimination, and bias are increasing, while love, gentleness, and the desire to understand one another seem to be at an all-time low.

Recent actions by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency have raised serious concerns about the treatment of human life. In many cases, there appears to be little regard for human rights, dignity, or due process.

I fully understand and appreciate the responsibility ICE carries in removing individuals who are known criminals and who pose a threat to society. Ensuring that such individuals are returned to their countries to face appropriate legal consequences is a necessary part of maintaining public safety.

However, I have been deeply troubled by news reports showing individuals—some of whom were U.S. citizens—being harmed, killed, or deported without due process of law. One heartbreaking example is the death of Renee Nicole Macklin, a 37-year-old mother of three from Minneapolis. Her life ended during an encounter with ICE agents in her own community.

Reports describe a chaotic scene in which an officer fired two shots at close range. Renee was known as a devoted mother and an active volunteer who supported neighborhood initiatives. Friends and family remember her for her kindness, resilience, and unwavering commitment to her children.

Witnesses expressed shock and fear as the incident unfolded. The tragedy has sparked public outcry and renewed debate about law enforcement practices and accountability within ICE operations. While officers often face dangerous situations requiring split-second decisions, events like this highlight the urgent need for greater transparency and oversight.

It is important for the public to understand that if an officer perceives a threat to their life—such as a vehicle moving toward them—they are legally permitted to use lethal force. This reality underscores the need for better training, clearer protocols, and stronger safeguards to prevent unnecessary loss of life.

This is a pivotal moment for prayer warriors to continue interceding for our nation. But prayer alone is not enough. We must also commit ourselves to doing the work required to make our communities safe, just, and compassionate places for every family.
